Bookmobile

In 2011, the Bookmobile and its driver/librarian Doug Frantz brought books and story times to 1,126 Windham County children and adults at 50 locations, circulating 5,707 books, and holding 530 story times attended by a cumulative total of 4,168 participants. Children, providers, parents and senior citizens have said fond farewells to Doug, and the Bookmobile is at rest in its garage until warm weather returns.

Now, as late fall gives way to the first signs of winter, Windham County Reads is in the midst of its own seasonal change, and we have news to share with you. We've worked hard these past three years to sustain our programs with the reduced funding levels that accompanied the onset of the recession, but the time has come to make the transition to new Bookmobile program leadership.

"Before you came I would be watching TV and, well, getting into trouble."

We're very pleased to let you know that when the Bookmobile goes back on the road next spring, it will do so under the auspices of Windham Child Care Association. Over the past few years, our Bookmobile stops have increasingly focused on young children at child care homes and centers, making Windham Child Care Association the ideal choice for this program's organizational home.

The Windham County Reads staff and board members are proud that we have been able to provide award-winning services since 1999, and we are delighted that these services have had a measurable impact on children's reading readiness and success. We're sad to see services for senior citizens end, but we are alerting public libraries to these outreach opportunities.

Our warm thanks to everyone who has expressed interest in and supported this program over the years. Complete information about Bookmobile services delivered by Windham Child Care Association will be available in late winter or early spring. In the meantime, if you have questions, please contact Ruth Allard at (802) 257-5725 or wcreads@sover.net.
